I can understand his point to some degree. I can just picture how weird it’ll be to see a Traverse one day with antique plates.

I don’t, given that antique doesn’t need to be a relative term. We had a definitive cutoff - 25 years. Doesn’t matter if you liked the car or not. But this is someone trying to say “I don’t think the cars newer than this date are good/important/relevant so they don’t get the reduced rates if someone wants one to save and show”.

If anything, it will be fascinating to see the day when the traverse becomes an antique. Because it is a product of right here and now. As are most cars. They are a window into the design and feelings of the era. And we kinda need to live with that. Even if they are a Chevette CS

I’ll just be grateful if the future of cars isn’t shapeless blobs like the Traverse.

Car design and greatness is cyclical. We had to go through the 70s and 80s to get to the 90s. I think the 2020-2030 cars (and crossovers/SUVs/etc...) will be a return to form after the blandness of the early 2000s and the amorphous bean shapes of the 2010s.

That is some bullshit. Who cares if the particular car some wants antique plates for is “of historical significance”.

Wheather ir not s car is worth keeping on the road is completely up to each individual. By this law my 84 Rabbit is not an antique. It has unassisted steering, manual shifting, crank windows , and a chassis designed in 1972.

That 7 dollar free is pretty nuts tho. The antique plate for my Rabbit was Over 200 dollars, but it’s a 1 time deal, I will never have to update it’s regi.  Like they were saying you do have to have proof of another car with regular registration. The idea being that your antique plated car will be your secondary car, seeing less time on the road, and that is why it’s cheaper.

The 25 year law also meant I could have had antique plates on me 91 Galant VR-4, however I wanted to drive it in the winter, and in Wi you are not allowed to drive an antique from November to April.

Don’t worry like all Other modern  GM products it won’t last 25 years.

Maybe just maybe the industry can convince people that wagons are cool, and SUVs are lame like the minivan.

I saw 2 Buick Xtours yesterday and that’s what I was thinking. “ Compared to a Travers that looks sporty and fun!”

Look at that shitbox El Camino. That’s why the rules are changing. The antique plates are meant for people who have classic/vintage/collector cars that drive them sparingly or seasonally. It is NOT meant as a loophole for people who have clapped out 1987 Suburbans to daily drive around and pay minimal registration fees. I could take or leave the 25 to 45 year change but the one that makes sense is the requirement to have a second “regular” car. Because the vintage plates aren’t supposed to be for daily driven cars.

Found the least Oppo comment I’ve ever read.

I’ve daily driven plenty of old/classic cars and I had them plated/insured as regular vehicles when I did.

This is a stu pid bill, but tbh the idea of classic/antique plates is nuts. I want my car to be safety inspected anyway, and nobody os going to tell me when/where I can drive it.

In my state you pay extra every year for vintage plates. Never heard of vintage insurance. My vintage vehicles have always carried normal insurance. Here you can pay less registration for collector registration , but it limits you to 1k mikes per year. Collector and vintage are two different categories.

Ah I see, interesting setup. The dispute in Arkansas was because the Vintage plates cost about $10 annually and the regular plates were closer to $100 annually. So people would scam it to get cheaper registration.

There are plenty of better reasons not to live in AR.

I have no problem with this.  A lot of these classic/antique rules were made 50+ years ago, when a car surviving past 50 years was a feat.  At least in the low-rust PNW, 25 year old cars are seen many times a day.  Cars age better now, and the goalposts have been moved.  I saw a ~1985 Corolla with vintage plates a couple weeks ago.  Fun that it survived, sure, but an antique or classic?  Not quite.

Funny we were discussing this, as I just got the rego renewal in for my vintage bike. The state tacked on a “public service” fee to all registration, and the fee is 104% of what the registration would mormally cost (including the vintage plate fee). Fuckers.
